Spend September in the Parks

From boat tours to the Harvest Home Festival, the Monmouth County Park System is filling September with fun, family-friendly activities to enjoy.   Here’s what is planned:

Tidal Tuesdays

Tuesday, September 1 at 11 a.m.
Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area, Manasquan

Join a Park System Naturalist and discover exciting things about nature and our coastal habitats during a fun activity.  FREE!

 

Teen Open Gym Basketball

Wednesdays, September 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Fort Monmouth Recreation Center, Tinton Falls

Teens age 13-18 are invited to play or practice on our courts. Cost is $5 per person per session; cash or check only. Under 18 with parental supervision.

 

Lunch Break Basketball

Fridays, September 4, 11, 18, & 25 from 12-1:30 p.m.

Fort Monmouth Recreation Center, Tinton Falls

Spend your lunch playing full court pick-up games in our climate controlled gym. The cost is $5 per person per session; cash or check only.

 

Boat Tours of the Manasquan Reservoir

Friday, September 4 at 5:30 p.m. & 6:30 p.m.

Saturdays & Sundays, September 5 & 6, 12 & 13, 19 & 20, and 26 & 27 at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m., & 5 p.m.

Monday, September 7 at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. & 5 p.m.

Manasquan Reservoir, Howell

These 45-minute tours are narrated by park system naturalists and include opportunities to view local wildlife. The cost is $6 per adult and $4 per child, age 12 and under. Please call to confirm schedule as tours are both weather and water level dependent. All tours leave from the Visitor Center.

 

Drop-In Surprise Story Time 

Saturday, September 5 from 11-11:45 a.m.

Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown

Join us for story time! If the weather is nice, look for the clue at the Horticultural Center’s entrance that leads to the secret spot. If it’s rainy, we’ll be inside. FREE!

 

Historical Fun and Games 

Saturday-Monday, September 5-7 from 1-4 p.m.

Historic Walnford, Upper Freehold

Enjoy variety of historical games both indoors and out. FREE!

 

Men’s Open Gym Basketball

Sundays, September 6, 13, 20, & 27 from 8-10 a.m.

Fort Monmouth Recreation Center, Tinton Falls

Shoot some hoops on the Rec Center’s full court gym. The cost is $5 per person per session; cash or check only.

 

Open House of the Historic Seabrook-Wilson House

Sundays, September 6, 13, 20, & 27 from 1-4 p.m.

Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

Visit this house, which dates back to the early 1700s, and see displays on the ecology of the bay and local history. FREE!

Perrineville Lake Park, Millstone

Explore the trail in the park with a park system naturalist. Afterwards, our naturalist will set up a table to field any and all questions. Feel free to bring your finds and photographs from other adventures and our naturalist will try to identify them. FREE!

Eco-Kayak Drop-In Tour of the Manasquan Reservoir

Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell

Novice paddlers welcome! Single and tandem kayaks are available on a first come basis. All tours depart on time. Program is limited to 12 participants. Wear clothing that can get wet. You must be age 14 to participate; under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Weight limits for kayaks are 250 lbs. for single and 400 lbs. for a double. Inclement weather will cancel the tour. The cost is $20 per person; cash or check only.

 

Bonsai Day

Sunday, September 13 from 12-4 p.m.

Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown

Presented with the Deep Cut Bonsai Society, this event highlights the intricate and ancient art of bonsai through demonstrations and displays.  Experts will be on hand to answer questions. Admission and parking are free.

 

Open Ceramics

Sunday, September 13 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.

Thompson Park Creative Arts Center, Lincroft

Choose from a large selection of bisque fired pottery pieces to glaze and make your own. Children age 12 and under are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $6 per hour plus price of bisque ware; cash or check only. Pieces will be fired in about a week.

 

Blacksmith Demonstration

Sunday, September 13 from 1-3 p.m.

Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Long Branch

Head outside with a park system naturalist to identify butterflies. Walk may be a mile or more. Open to ages 12 and up, under 18 with adult. FREE!

 

Jersey Shore Rose Society Rose Show

Saturday, September 19 from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown

Deep Cut Gardens is hosting the Jersey Shore Rose Society’s 44th Annual Rose Show. Admission and parking are free.

 

Wind & Sea Festival

Saturday, September 19 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

This event celebrates the Bayshore with coastal activities including stand-up paddling, kayaking, seining, fishing, crabbing, kite flying, sand casting, shelling, nature walks, and more. The event will also have music, food, and representatives from local organizations. Most activities are free, but some may have a fee. Admission and parking are free. Parking is available at the Belford Ferry Terminal, located at 10 Harbor Way, Belford. A shuttle bus will transport visitors to and from the ferry terminal to Bayshore Waterfront Park.

 

Fall’s a Hoot

Saturday, September 19 from 3-5 p.m.

Thompson Park Creative Arts Center, Lincroft

Make an adorable little owl decoration. Open to ages 4 and up, under 18 with adult. FREE!

 

Climb Time

Sunday, September 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Thompson Park, Lincroft

Try the park system’s 25’ portable climbing wall and experience the sport of rock climbing close to home. Climbers must be 42” or taller and age 8 or older (under 18 with adult). FREE!

 

Cornbread Contest 

Sunday, September 20 from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Historic Walnford, Upper Freehold

Bake your favorite cornbread for our contest. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Prepare and bring a 9” x 13” (or equivalent) pan of your cornbread along with a typed copy of the recipe to Historic Walnford between 12:30-1 p.m. Visitors can sample and vote for their favorite.  Ribbons will be awarded at 3 p.m. A corny joke contest will be held from 2-3 p.m. FREE!

 

Nature Lecture Series: Seahorses & Pufferfish

Thursday, September 24 from 7-8 p.m.

Bayshore Waterfront Park Activity Center, Port Monmouth

Find out where these fish swim, what they eat, and their fascinating life histories during this talk by a park system naturalist. We will also discover some other weird and wonderful coastal fish that call Monmouth County home. FREE!

Great Fall Perennial Plant Swap 

Saturday, September 26

Plant drop off from 8:30-10 a.m.
Plant selection from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown

Bring perennials in one-quart, one-gallon or two-gallon containers and take home the same size and number of plants. Please label all plants. Houseplants may also be exchanged, but no annuals please.  FREE!

 

Harvest Home Festival

Sunday, September 27 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel

This old-fashioned fair is reminiscent of the 1890s. Visitors can enjoy wagon rides, games, and live entertainment. There are also ongoing craft demonstrations and a Home & Garden competition. Admission and parking are free.

 

Open Shoot Archery

Sunday, September 27 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Thompson Park Activity Barn, Lincroft

Try your hand at archery during this open shoot. All equipment is provided. No outside equipment permitted. There is limited instruction during this program open to ages 8 and up (under 18 with adult). Cost is $10 per person; cash or check only.

 

Total Lunar Eclipse

Sunday, September 27 at 8:30 p.m.

Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area, Manasquan

Join a park system naturalist for this total lunar eclipse. Experts predict this total lunar eclipse will be 100% visible on the East Coast, weather permitting. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on and dress for the weather. Open to ages 7 and up, under 18 with adult. FREE!
