Holmdel Girls’ Tennis Takes Group 2 Title For Third Straight Year

On October 20, the Holmdel High School girls’ tennis team defeated Haddonfield, 5-0, to add the title of State Group 2 Champs to their resume. This makes a “three-peat” for the Hornets, who also earned the title in 2014 and 2015. At 20-1 on the season, the team won the Shore Conference championship earlier that month. As the second seed in the Tournament of Champions, the Hornets were to take on the winner of the Newark Academy/New Providence match at the Edison Tennis Complex.

“This collection of student-athletes is a true embodiment of ‘Holmdel Excellence,’” said Principal William Loughran.

The team was led to victory by Brianna Gibbs playing 1st Singles for the team, Alexandra Wojciak at 2nd Singles, Rita Vought at 3rd Singles, Emily Kong and Vicky Vought at 1st Doubles, and Natalie Cipriano and Jaimee Ratkoski at 2nd Doubles. Gibbs was also competing in the state singles tournament, while the team of Emily Kong and Vicky Vought were to play in the state doubles tournament.

The Hornets are coached by head coach Chuck Chelednik and assistant coach Don Russell.
