Grand Opening of New Location for Honey Baked Ham & Cafe in Middletown

The location may be new, but it brings with it a long and delicious time-honored tradition of good taste. On May 3, a ribbon-cutting celebration was held for the grand opening of Honey Baked Ham Co. and Café, now located at Twin Brook Commons, 770 Highway 35 South in Middletown (near Kohl’s and Stop & Shop). The opening marked the relocation of the shop from its previous address a bit further south, at the Union Square Shopping Center.

More than four decades ago, Harry J. Hoenselaar began a special tradition when he opened his first “The Honey Baked Ham” company store in Michigan. He’d select the finest quality bone-in ham, cure it in his secret marinade, and then, for tenderness, he’d smoke the ham for hours over a unique blend of hardwood chips. The crowning touch was Harry’s crunchy sweet glaze that crackled with good taste. He even found a way to slice the ham into perfectly even slices. He invented and patented a unique machine that slices a ham in a single, continuous spiral. The rest is history – and today, every store of Honey Baked Ham still prepares the same way Harry did…one ham at a time.

For the past 15+ years, the Middletown store – family-owned by the father and son team of Carmine and Keith Visone of Holmdel – has been serving the community with the finest quality hams on the market, as well as hearty side dishes and delectable desserts. Gift packages can be ordered for delivery to a home or business, catering is available, and individual boxes lunches provide the perfect, convenient comfort-food meal.

To meet the demand of their legions of loyal customers, the Visone family decided to move the business to a new, much larger site, where they offer patrons an expanded menu and a comfortable, home-like setting with seating for 36 people. The 3,000-square-foot location also boasts a fireplace, WiFi, a flat-screen TV, and premium sound system. Besides the famed hams, the tempting menu includes a variety of specialty sandwiches, ribs, sides, salads, soups, thick cut bacon, appetizers, rolls, desserts, and more. Visitors who peruse the website will find menus, special offers, recipes, and easy online ordering options perfect for busy schedules.

Local, county, and state dignitaries turned out for the May 3 ribbon-cutting, including New Jersey State Senator Joseph Kyrillos, Monmouth County Freeholder Director Thomas Arnone, Middletown Mayor Gerard Scharfenberger, and Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini. Carmine Visone is chairman of the Aberdeen Economic Business Council and also co-owner of Home Away From Home Academy in Aberdeen. He proudly stated, “I’m honored that we had the senator here, along with the mayors and the freeholder.”
