The Foundation for Shrewsbury Education (FSE) will be hosting the 19th annual Shrewsbury 5K Classic and One Mile Any Style on October 20. FSE expects more than 300 participants to turn out for the day’s events, which include the 5K race, a one-mile race, and a kiddie dash. The race will start and finish at Shrewsbury Borough School, and runners will be able to visit the post-race expo, where there will be free food, drinks, music, and other goods from local businesses.

The 5K is one of FSE’s two annual fundraisers, with the proceeds going to support the advancement of technology and extracurricular academic programs at Shrewsbury Borough School. This year, FSE purchased 60 iPads for use by the students and started scholarship opportunities for SBS students to attend programs such as the Stars Challenge at Monmouth University and Small Factory Production’s renowned “Create-A-Cartoon” class.

“The 5K is truly a wonderful community event,” said Jen Gilmartin, race coordinator and FSE vice president. “The race brings not only our SBS community together for the event, but runners from all over who get to come and see what an extraordinary family we are here in Shrewsbury.”

Runners can register online at http://shrewsburyfoundation.org or at www.raceforum.com/shrewsbury. The cost for the 5K is $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the race, and the cost of the one-mile race is $25 in advance or $30 on race day. The kiddie dash is free and is for kids up to fifth grade. Packet pickup for the race will be Friday, October 18 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Road Runner Sports on Route 35 in Shrewsbury. Registration on race day will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Shrewsbury Borough School, 20 Obre Place.

The One-Mile Any Style race will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K race will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will take runners on a USATF certified course through the neighborhoods of Shrewsbury. The kiddie dash will take place at the school at 10:30 a.m. following the awards presentation. Refreshments will be provided to runners at a post-race expo, along with goods and services from various local businesses.

FSE is a group of Shrewsbury Borough School parents who raise funds to support technology and other educational programs at SBS not funded in the school budget. “The Shrewsbury Borough School is immensely thankful for all of the efforts that the Shrewsbury Foundation for Education makes to support the acquisition and implementation of technology in our school,” said Brent MacConnell, school superintendent.  “Over the past several years, the FSE has not only enabled the school to make key hardware and software purchases, but they have begun to provide opportunities for all of our students to experience incredible enrichment opportunities outside of the school day. The FSE’s dedication to our children and school will truly help us to provide a 21st-century education for all of our students.”
